“Are Those ‘Barbie’ Oscar Snubs Really Indicative of a Thriving Patriarchy?”

This piece was one of many that I read regarding the snub or non-snub of Barbie at the Oscars. It was refreshing since it had all the information and had let the initial ‘panic’ slow down before releasing a think piece. It even acknowledges that everyone had added their opinions and “we’re adding yet another (and hopefully, final) one to the mix.”

It brings up the talking points that have been circulating the internet over the past two weeks and can keep a relevant voice. Samantha Bergeson has clearly been able to take in a variety of opinions and laid them all out, without it feeling overwhelming. Readers then don’t have to get caught up in an X, TikTok and Instagram frenzy.

It gives a balanced discussion, mentioning the reasons why Barbie fans have been annoyed (it was the biggest film of 2023) but gives an alternative explanation (that doesn’t mean the Oscars have to nominate it.) As a film fan, I also appreciated the acknowledgement of films such as May December, Priscilla and Killers of the Flower Moon which have been left out of some conversations.

Readers want a piece that tells them the facts and explains what has been happening, which this does, with a slight tone of sarcasm attached to keep it witty and light. The article gives a well-rounded explanation of this ‘internet drama’ without feeling like it is talking down to the people who objected over Barbie.

It is easy for writers to act above the people they are acknowledging, which can be off-putting for a reader. Luckily this piece has the correct facts and shares them with the audience without pushing it at them.
